This web site is created with the sole aim of sharing my enjoyment of the pennywhistle with others who are interested, for whatever reasons. There is no element of personal financial gain connected with this site. The recordings you find here are my own original recordings. They are freely available for download and non-commercial use. The tunes are mainly what I believe to be "traditional", though they may not be so in every case. I have no wish to violate any copyright or to tread on toes, and I encourage anyone who feels that they may have a legitimate grievance concerning any material on this site to

*"Planxty Dale Wisely" © 2001 by David de la Barre.
**"Hector the Hero" : Mixed by Gary Humphrey who plays Overton tenor D whistle and MIDI piano sequence.   Mick plays Rose blackwood soprano D whistle and Yamaha flute.

† † Q1 whistles, by Alba, are available only from Phil Brown. Check out Phil's website, Big Whistle Music
*† A special thank you to Big Whistle Music for providing both Tony Dixon's "Trad" whistle, and the amazing Syn Low D tuneable whistle by Erle Bartlett. Many thanks, Phil and Erle!

Welcome!

The tunes on this page are presented in two formats. Stream them for quick listening using RealPlayer, or be more patient and download the mp3 files. The RealPlayer option is good if you just want a quick taste, if you are impatient, or you can't spare the hard drive space for another mp3(are things really that bad?). The difference in sound quality between the RealMedia files and the mp3s is significant and I really only recommend the mp3 option to you, but the choice is yours, of course. If you want to keep the music and listen to it later then you will have to download the mp3s. Windows Media Player can play the mp3s, or you can use other software, my favourite being Winamp, which costs nothing and is also free of annoying advertisements. If you do not have RealPlayer on your system, or if you would like to try Winamp, then please click on the links on this page to take you to the relevant destination.

Clicking on the music links should be sufficient to start the download or playing automatically. If you have trouble downloading the mp3s, try right-clicking the link and choose, "Save Target As", or the equivalent (Mac users have a differently worded option).

Each tune has accompanying sheet music which, in most cases, closely represents the tune as actually played, but some of the sheet music only shows tunes in their simple form, without ornamentation. Click on a link to open the notation in a new window. To save it to your hard drive, right click inside the notation image and select, "Save Picture As". The sheet music images are quite large, and if you aren't able to view them without the inconvenience of scrolling, you will also find alternative, smaller scale images available.

Please note that I have used whistles of different keys to make these recordings, and so the notation will not always reflect the actual key you are listening to. The small whistle pictures found to the left of the tunes on this page represent the actual whistles I have used to play the tunes. Please move your mouse pointer over the images for details of each whistle. This has previously been a problem for many people but it should now work for everyone who uses a modern, up-to-date browser.

I will be adding new tunes to this collection on a regular, if infrequent, basis so please do return when the fancy takes you and see what's new.

I have changed the order in which the tunes appear on the page. From now on you will find the latest additions at the top of the page instead of at the bottom. I believe this makes more sense and is more convenient for returning visitors.

Lastly, enjoy, and thanks for visiting! :-)

Mick
